Principal Mechanical Engineer
ICON is looking to add a Principal Mechanical Engineer to our Phoenix team. This role involves leading technical decisions, overseeing major deliverables, and ensuring alignment with project goals and standards. You will drive engineering excellence, mentor team members, and foster an environment of continuous improvement. As a subject matter expert, you’ll collaborate across teams to promote effective communication, knowledge-sharing, and interdisciplinary problem-solving.interdisciplinary problem-solving. This role will be based at our Austin, TX headquarters and will report to the VP of Phoenix Engineering.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead the team in making informed technical decisions to align with project requirements and priorities.
- Review and approve critical technical deliverables, including CDRs, PDRs, Testing Results and safety reviews.
- Define and uphold standards and processes for completing work within the discipline.
- Establish and promote guiding design principles and best practices to ensure consistency and quality.
- Oversee and validate work to ensure it meets disciplinary standards and project goals.
- Mentor engineers to foster a culture of growth, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Drive engineering excellence by adhering to the scientific method and promoting rigorous analysis.
- Act as a subject matter expert in design and development efforts, sharing technical expertise.
- Compile and analyze operational, test, and research data to guide product design and refinement.
- Develop and enforce quality assurance processes to ensure product integrity and reliability.
- Champion innovation by exploring and integrating emerging technologies and industry trends.
- Collaborate across engineering teams and departments to align technical efforts and facilitate communication.
- Encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge-sharing to solve complex problems and drive innovation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- 15+ years of professional experience as a Mechanical Engineer, with a proven track record in leading large system development projects.
- Expertise in component manufacturing processes, including machining, rapid prototyping, and related methods.
- Proficiency in parametric solid modeling and CAD software, with SolidWorks and PDM experience required.
- Skilled in creating detailed drawings with a strong understanding of applicable standards and tolerancing (GD&T).
- Exceptional technical aptitude and problem-solving abilities, with strong reasoning skills.
- Collaborative team player with excellent communication skills, focused on finding optimal solutions in a team environment.
- Familiarity with AGILE SCRUM project management methodology.
- Service-oriented mindset, particularly when supporting others.
- Ability to thrive under pressure and effectively prioritize in a dynamic start-up environment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills to convey ideas clearly and effectively.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Proven experience managing or leading technical teams.
- Professional Engineering (PE) license with the authority to stamp and approve engineering drawings.
- Background in the automation industry, with expertise in developing innovative solutions.
- Experience in producing products with UL, CE and related conformance/safety designations.
- Start-up experience or a demonstrated ability to streamline and create efficient processes in dynamic environments.
- Professional experience with thermal and mechanical FEA, including topological optimization, using tools such as Ansys or SolidWorks Simulation.
- Strong ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, along with troubleshooting expertise in electrical and mechanical systems.
- Familiarity with industrial safety systems and best practices.
- A passion for continuous learning, growth, and tackling challenging problems.
PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Willingness to work in challenging environments, when needed. Including extreme temperatures (above 100°F or below freezing), exposure to sun, rain, mud, and occasional power outages. Comfort with getting dirty is essential.
- Ability to travel internationally for up to 4+ weeks per year.
